At the time their arrival, the Ottomans were seen as a "barbaric" people, but they went on to embody a real fascination for the East. At the Fine Arts Centre from 19 January 2012 to 20 January 2013.
When, in 1453, the Ottomans conquered Constantinople, they brought with them exotic and luxurious objects that fuelled the fascination for Eastern marvels.
The news of the conquered city swept Europe, and the fear of the Ottomans grew increasingly as they got closer and closer to Vienna.
But, with pillage came a multiple cultural exchange, with artists from the four corners of the European continent now crossing the Bosporus. Trade and commerce flourished, and artworks were imbued with an Oriental touch.
The exhibit shows the appeal that the Middle-East had on the people of the time.
The charm that the Middle-East had on Western artists underlines the importance of Islamic influence on the Renaissance world.
